Post Game Reaction — Titans Win to Get the Top Pick in a Loss to the Texans
Well, that’s all she wrote. The Titans season is over with nearly as much excitement as it began with. The Titans secured the first pick in the draft and there’s a renewed sense of hope coming off one of the most depressing seasons in Titans history. Thanks to the help of Vol great Joe Milton the Titans were able to compound their loss to the Texans with the Patriots win over the Bills to get the top pick in the draft — something that has only happened once in Titans history in 2016 when Jon Robinson traded out of #1 to 15 and picked up All-Pro’s including future HOF running back Derrick Henry.
The final nail in the coffin came early in the 4th quarter when Bryce Oliver fumbled the reverse handoff (great playcall Callahan) in which Texans Defensive Tackle Derek Barnett (another Tennessee great) took the fumble all the way for a TD making it 23-6. The Titans effort and gameplan was not indicative of a team trying their hardest to earn a final win in Week 18. Perhaps that might be due to Amy Adams Strunk letting Callahan know that regardless of the result today that his job is safe. The same may not be able to be said about 2nd year GM Ran Carthon as a report from Adam Schefter a few hours before kickoff indicated. If the Titans move on from Ran Carthon that would be a dramatic move by AAS after her initial coronation of Carthon when he accepted the job of GM in Tennessee. There’s a case for and against Carthon, but I’d expect AAS to give him one more year with coach Brian Callahan (who he hired) and give it one last ride in 2025.
Levis proved himself as he always has proved himself boom and bust — just this time it was certainly a little more bust. Levis hit an improbable 49 yard TD pass to Tay Martin as the 4th quarter was waning. However, it was all for naught. The Titans did what they’ve done the entire season and that’s fail at scoring points.
The Titans now have an opportunity to reset the franchise this offseason. The Titans are 8th in the league in cap space heading into the 2025 offseason and they can increase that even more with some key subtractions to aging players: Key, Landry, Murray Jr. The Titans have a chance and should use that chance get younger when they have the opportunity this free agency period.
In regards to the draft the Titans now have their top choice of: Sanders, Ward, Carter, Hunter or a trade down. With the QB play that Titans fans have had to endure the last 2 years it’s hard to not see the Titans adding a QB in the draft and delivering hope to a franchise that is in desperate need of something fans can hang their hat on.
