Should the Titans Explore Adding Matthew Stafford?
The Tennessee Titans are in an enviable position. They currently hold the #1 overall pick, have $44m in cap space (before cuts), and added a stud GM in Mike Borgonzi. Newly acquired GM Mike Borgonzi recently spoke about wanting to draft a generational player and adding “12 picks in the top 100 over the next three years.” Now, what does this have to do with Matthew Stafford…a lot. Everyone knows that the Titans are looking to add a starting QB for the 2025 season. Where that QB comes from, either the draft, Free Agency, or via trade is up for debate. Many scouts are divided regarding top QB prospects Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward. Some experts have each or one of them as a top 5 prospect in the draft, or perhaps not even worthy of a first round pick entirely. Regardless, the Titans have to find out who will be their QB for the foreseeable future this offseason
One interesting story broke early on championship Sunday regarding Matthew Stafford.
Ian Rapoport explains that Matthew Stafford is looking to get paid, either by the Rams or another team this offseason, although he’s still under contract for the next two years fo over $100m. The Rams could be looking to restructure Stafford’s contract given he’s set to be paid about $50m guaranteed for next year. Stafford played quite well this season with 3,762 yards, 20 TDs, and 8 interceptions for a 93.7 QB Rating. Stafford has been in the league a while, yes. However, he’s consistently played really good football over the last 16 seasons and he’s the last QB not named Mahomes to win the Super Bowl. Rams GM Les Snead could look to turn the page and start the rebuild a year sooner, rather than later for the Rams. Here’s an excerpt from Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk:
That certainly sounds like a GM positioning his way to making something happen. Mike Borgonzi should be on the phone with Les Snead right now and see what the going price for Stafford may be. Stafford will be 37 a few days after the Super Bowl, but he certainly looks like he has about 2, maybe 3 years max, of decent football left. To make this more enticing for Titans fans the Quarterbacks Coach of the Detroit Lions from the 2016-2017 season was none other than Brian Callahan who spent two years up close with Stafford. Brian Callahan spoke late last week with AtoZ’s Easton Freeze about his #1 trait in a QB, “what does their nervous system look like…what do they look like when things break down. How do they operate when the pocket is muddy...” Brian Callahan even mentions “Stafford” by name when going down a list of optimum QB’s that meet his #1 trait he looks for in a QB.
At the end of the day it will probably take a 3rd round or higher to nab Stafford. Unfortunately for the Titans they don’t have a 3rd round pick this year thanks to the L’Jarius Sneed trade. However, what they do have is Will Levis, Jeffrey Simmons, Harold Landry and picks 35, 109, 115, and then some. The #1 overall pick is completely out the question, therefore it isn’t listed. However, if the Titans were to get the information needed from Les Sneed regarding what it would cost to get Stafford it’s possible the Titans could trade the pick prior to the draft to say perhaps the NYG and gain plenty of picks to make getting Stafford much more palatable.
If the Titans can trade for Stafford it would put the Titans in an almost immediate position of contending for the division. Stafford could be considered the best or second best QB in the AFCS next year. In addition, the Titans could conceivably come away with Abdul Carter or the electrifying Heisman winner Travis Hunter to add to the team…perhaps a “generational player” can be had after all and still have a QB that can help the Titans contend now. There are plenty of skeptics that call this a bad QB draft class. If that’s the case stacking picks for next year or even 2027 would be the optimal goal to continue to create a Titans team worth contending for the next 3-4 years. Honestly, this would be the best case scenario for the Titans to consider. GM Mike Borgonzi has plenty of work to do, and hopefully he makes the right decision. Whether that’s to draft a QB at #1 overall, or add a stud QB like Matthew Stafford and add several picks to hit or get close to “12 picks in the top 100 over three years.”
